Garmisch

Although Garmisch is known more for outdoor activities than sightseeing, it has a number of places to visit. The historic churches of Garmisch and Partenkirchen are worth a peek. The Werdenfelser Heimatmuseum, a regional history and folk museum, occupies a 17th Century house. The Richard Strauss Institute has a musical museum, a library, and multimedia terminals that celebrate the life of the late German composer. Performances of Strauss works are scheduled throughout the year. There are many other attractions to easily visit from Garmisch - the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum in Großweil, the Schloßmuseum Murnau, Linderhof Castle in Ettal, the Heimat- or Folk Museum in Oberammergau (site of the Passion Play), and the Violinmaking and Folk Museum in Mittenwald. The Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles in Schwangau are near Füssen.
