Auxonne

Since 1172, Auxonne played many roles in French history housing the rich and powerful families of the country. However, in 843 before Auxonne became its own town, it was once a county prized for the Holy Roman Emperor. Only a short distance from Burgundy, Auxonne could not deny adopting Burgundy’s influences. This led to the town’s attachment and loyalty to the kingdom of Franc by 1574. Present-day Auxonne is a defensive structure site of Vauban and visitors can stroll around the historical walled city where Napoleon Bonaparte first received training.
