Hanover

Just outside of Montego Bay is a parish that borders Cornwall county and St. James. The smallest parish on the island, this historical area is the birthplace of labor leader and first Jamaican prime minister Alexander Bustamante, one of seven national Jamaican heroes. Hanover was an abundant sugar plantation that attracted many European Jews to settle and become merchants, store keepers, and goldsmiths. When the slave trade was abolished in 1834, crop development became wide spread especially bananas that were exported in the 1960’s. With economic growth blossoming, so did the discovery of Hanover’s mountainous terrain and unexploited beautiful coves and bays.
