Peterhead Peterhead is a port in east Scotland, situated 20 miles north of Aberdeen on Scotland's North Sea coast. The town was founded in 1593 and grew with development of the local fishing industry, which was predominantly herring-based. At the beginning of the 19th century, Peterhead was center of the country's whaling industry, and in 1982 was the United Kingdom's largest port in terms of the value of fish landed. The town's Arbuthnot Museum records its traditional economic dependence on these industries. In the 1970s the town's economy was bolstered by the discovery of oil offshore in the North Sea. Architecturally, it is noted for its many pink granite buildings. |
