Massawa

A Red Sea port, the two-island city of Massawa is located in northeastern Eritrea. Like most cities in the region, Massawa has an eclectic cultural history because of its numerous occupations by various groups. Among the city’s attractions is a 17th century coral-block house, coral being one of the traditional building materials. Not to be missed too are several covered markets, the Sheikh Hanafi Mosque and Campo, which is an area lined of Turkish and Egyptian houses with interesting wood-carved facades.
