Petrozavodsk

Petrozavodsk is situated on Lake Onega, one of Europe’s largest lakes. Founded by Peter the Great in the early 1700’s, Petrozavodsk name is taken from “Petr” for Peter and “zavod” meaning ‘works’. Rich in iron ore, the area was developed for factories creating cannons and guns. Celebrating the cities 300th anniversary, a Sculpture Park was created along the river banks. Many of the sculptures were given to the city by its sister cities from around the world.
