Kostroma

As old as Moscow, Kostroma is rich in history and abounds in magnificent monuments. Located on the banks for the Volga River this picturesque town has been the source of inspiration for many Russian artists. Isaac Levitan, Aleksei Savrasov and Boris Kustodiev have made Kostroma and its surrounding area subjects of paintings. Fiodor Volkov, the founder of Russia’s first theatre was born here. Churches, old houses, barns, windmills and small bathhouses make up the collection of the open air museum that has been created right outside of the Ipatievsky Monastery. Kostroma is a perfect blend of old and new – making it a wonderful place to visit.
