Nikopol

The Ukrainian town of Nikopol is located on the right bank of Dnieper. Formerly called "Nikitin Rog," it occupies an elongated peninsula between the low and marshy points of Dnieper's two arms. Nikopol's inhabitants, mostly Little Russians, Jews and Mennonites, carry on the industries of shipbuilding and agriculture, chiefly corn, linseed, hemp and wool. Nikopol's fortified camp of the Zaporogian Cossacks was brilliantly described in N.V. Gogel's 1834 novel, Taras Bulba.
