Cartago
Cartago is Costa Rica’s first capital and its oldest capital until 1823. Cartago was founded by Juan Vasquez de Coronado in 1563. It’s an old community that sits at the Irazú Volcano. Cartago’s rich soil is ideal for agriculture however it mainly produces orchids, milk, potatoes and onions.
Visitors can find 16th century ruins in the city’s central park, beautiful orchid gardens at the Lankester Botanical Garden, discover the legend of La Negrita, and tour Basilica of Los Angeles, the "Ruins of Santiago Apostle Church", The City Museum, Maria Auxiliadora church, and the Technological Institute of Costa Rica.
