Vytegra

Once, the riverbanks of Vytegra were made striking by the Intercession Church, a structure built in the traditional wooden style by Northern carpenters in 1706. The design in these churches was often slightly bizarre, and the Intercession had 24 gleaming silver-blue domes, white-washed exterior and light green roofs. While the Intercession burnt down in the 1960's, you can travel by boat to nearby Kizhi Island, where many examples of this traditional wooden architecture, including the Transfiguration Cathedral, can be seen. In Vytegra, along the riverbanks and red sandstone, fossils of fish and other marine life can sometimes be spotted. The landscape is pastoral and makes for a pleasant stroll.
