Châteauneuf-en-Auxois Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is a 16th century fortified commune just miles away from Dijon, France. The medieval village sits hillside overlooking the Canal de Bourgogne. The castle was built in 1132 by Jean de Chaudeney and after 9 generations of governing the fief, the castle was given to the godson of Philippe le Bon (Duke of Burgundy), Philippe Pot. It has been bought and sold amongst many families and by 1936, the castle was donated to the Chateauneuf state and its neighboring village declared and protected as historical monuments. Travelers visiting the village can witness an impressive 16th century Châteauneuf-en-Auxois at the Medieval Market festival held every two years. Volunteers transform the entire village into a medieval French countryside fair with fire eaters, knights in armor, jugglers, minstrels, josting matches, and medieval banquets. Visitors are encouraged to participate in merriment! |
