Wolgast

As a Wendish stronghold in the 12th century, Wolgast was home to dukes and German settlers. Because of the town-wide fire in 1713 by Russian soldiers during a battle, much of what we see now in modern Wolgast are buildings built in the 18th and 19th centuries, although the town hall is modeled after the same baroque style. You can visit the old home of the Romantic painter Philip Otto Runge, whose house was converted into a museum of his artwork. Learn more about the town's history at its historical museum - the Stadgeschichtliches Museum, near the marketplace Kaffeemühle.
