Mycenae

Mycenae is one of the most well known archaeological sites in Greece. This ancient city is best known for the Mycenean civilization that once prospered under King Agamemnon, the ruler of the Greeks in the war against Troy. The area was excavated by the famous German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1870, and many of the uncovered items are now on display at the archeological museum.  Visitors may view a portion of the ancient city gates, impressively known as the Lion Gate. Also of interest to visitors a distant mountain range can be seen to resemble the profile of King Agamemnon's death mask when viewed from the mysterious ruins of Mycanae.
