Chiclayo

Chiclayo is Peru’s fourth largest city however, the liveliest and the capital of the Lambayeque northern region. Chiclayo was inhabited by a large number of indigenous civilizations since 1st century AD until the 16th century when Spanish explorers discovered the city and named it Santa Maria de los Valles de Chiclayo. Its name derives from many historical accounts though frequent records state that the name “Chiclayo” comes from the “green fruit that hangs” known as chiclayop. Post-revolutionary war, the small village was dubbed as a “Heroic City” recognized for its efforts in the Peruvian War of Independence. Present-day Chiclayo, now a metropolis, is known as the Capital of Friendship and has an agricultural economy that continues to thrive.

Travelers passing by Chiclayo will witness centuries of history from colonial architecture, archaeological sites and ruins, old-world medicinal practices, and tombs of kings from the past. Visitors can also horseback through the Pomac forest and find interesting merchandise at Mercado de Brujos (Witch Market). Religious festivities are celebrated annually where tourists are encourged to participate.
