Vladivostok

Vladivostok is capital of the Maritime Territory, in southeastern Russia, on Golden Horn Bay, an inlet of the Sea of Japan. Vladivostok is the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, Russia's major Pacific seaport, and the main base of their Pacific fleet. The harbour, kept open by icebreakers in winter months, serves as a base for fishing and whaling fleets. The Far Eastern State University is located here, and the city is an important centre of scientific research. Vladivostok, founded as a military outpost in 1860, grew rapidly after the completion in 1903 of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. From 1918 to 1922 the city was occupied by Japanese and Allied forces.
