Vulcano

Vulcano is an active volcanic island of the Aeolian archipelago, north of Sicily, Italy. Ancient Greeks originally named the island Therassia and Thermessa. The island’s myths indicated that the Olympian god Hephaestus or Vulcan (as named by the Romans) had his own private workshop inside the volcano. Until the 19th century, Romans have been retrieving raw materials harvesting wood, mining alum and sulfur. Present-day Vulcano is famous for its therapeutic mud baths, hot springs, and vineyards. Travelers visiting Vulcano can hike Fossa di Vulcano, catch some rays at Siaggia Sabbia Nera beach, and tour the Gruppo Nazionale Vulcanologia museum.
