Procida Procida was created by 4 volcanic eruptions now dormant and submerged beneath the ocean. It is one of the Phlegraean Islands that sits off the coast of Naples in southern Italy. Procida is Latin for Prochyta or Prima Cyme which means ‘near Cuma.’ Procida has been settled by the Mycenaeans between 15th and 16th century BC; the Greeks in 8th century BC, and lastly by the Romans throughout the Roman Imperial Rule. Present-day Procida is popular for its marine industry aiding in the growth of its economy. Visitors can witness religious processions during Holy week where a nightly vigil joins communities of Procida. Visitors can also hike Marina di Chiaiolella, a once active volcanic crater, and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic and colorful views of Procida from Marina Corricella village. |
