Gavi Well-known for producing Piedmont’s white wine, the town of Gavi is legendarily named after Princess Gavia, daughter of King Clodimir of Franks. In 1202, Gavi was sold to the Republic of Genoa and by the 15th century, was used as refuge for the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa. In 1528, Gavi reclaimed their town and built a fortress securing their power. Today, visitors can tour the fortress and castle, medieval Municipal Palace, Church of San Giacomo Maggiore and the 18th century Franciscan convent. |
