Kythira Kythira is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands. At the southern tip of the island, lies the charming village of Khora, also known as Kythira Town. With a population of 750, this is the main place on the island. Above the village looms massive walls of the 16th-century Venetian castle - Kythira's most outstanding attraction. Its prominent location affords spectacular views of the harbor and the town. With its typical white-washed, cycladic-style houses and narrow alleys, the town is an enchanting sight. Across the islands are scattered ruins of medieval castles. About six miles from Kapsali lies a 17th-century monastery, with an icon which is said to have performed miracles. On the northeast coast are the remains of the island’s former capital, Palaiokhora. Though most of the buildings inside the walls are in ruins, it still is a spectacular site and the island's main attraction. Don't miss the Byzantine church with its beautiful frescoes and icons. The Archaeological Museum has displays including remarkable finds from the Minoan, Mycenaean and Roman periods. |
